What Is A Hydraulic Pump?

Hydraulic pumps are very simple and they have many applications. Their basic design is a piston in a cylinder that exerts pressure on an incompressible liquid (often oil), and the force is transmitted to another piston which will do something useful for you. The force is usually multiplied during the process, and so the second piston can achieve much more than the first. To create force multiplication, the relative size of the pistons is increased.

The oil needs to be free from bubbles because if a piston is used when bubbles are present, a lot of the force is wasted compressing those bubbles rather than driving the second piston which is really not an efficient way to go about things. Most pump failures are because of oil contamination of one kind or another. The oil reservoirs should be made with stainless steel or aluminium to avoid corrosion and reduce the chance of oil contamination.

The pipe containing the oil can be assorted lengths and shapes in a hydraulic pump which is very handy because they can be used in almost any system design. The pipes can also be branched so that the master piston drives multiple slaves.

You may not even know it but you probably own some sort of hydraulic pump. Cars use them for the braking system. When you depress the brake pedal it applies pressure to two master cylinder pistons which each drive two slave pistons (there’s one at each wheel). These in turn press the brake pads against the brake rotor to stop the car. The thought behind two cylinders each driving a pair of cylinders as opposed to one cylinder driving four is in case there is a fault with a master cylinder - in this case if you only have the one, you cannot stop the car because all of your brake pads cannot work properly.

Some hydraulic pumps are manual and some are powered by electricity, compressed air or petrol. Manual hydraulic pumps are great because they have portability because they don’t need an additional power supply. They are perfect for occasional tasks but they don’t have the power and speed of powered pumps. They are also labour intensive.

Electric and pneumatic pumps are both good when the required power source is nearby. They will get more done in a quicker time than a manual hydraulic pump but the downside is the price and the fact that they must be powered by air or electricity and so the supply must be readily available.

Petrol pumps are good for cases where a manual pump is not powerful enough and where the constraints of an electric or pneumatic pump don’t allow for usage in remote places.

Hydraulic pumps have all sorts of uses but if you find that you need to purchase one yourself, make sure that you do your background research and get the most appropriate one for the job.

The British Armed Forces are made up of the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. They are the government sponsored defence units for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and it is their job to guard Britain and its overseas territories and Crown Dependencies and to help with international peacekeeping missions. They are managed by the Defence Council (the head of which is the Secretary of State for Defence). The head of the British Armed Forces is actually Her Majesty The Queen and it is to her that all members pledge allegiance.

The British Armed Forces came into existence on 1st May 1707 when the armed forces of England and Scotland merged. This meant that the navy and the army of both countries became one. The seat of control was. This came about because of the Acts of Union - parliamentary acts in both countries which put into effect the terms of the 1706 Treaty of Union. The union brought together the two countries who were already sharing the same Monarch because King James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne from Queen Elizabeth I.

The British Forces were deployed in America, Europe and Scotland from the late 17th century and as the British Empire expanded they also moved into the West Indies, North America and India. The first real world war though was the Seven Years’ War (1755-1763) where Britain’s main enemy was France. Battles were fought on both land and sea. Britain also took part in the American War of Independence (1775-1783), the Napoleonic Wars, and in later years the Crimean War, Boer War and the First World War.

The modern Royal Air Force was created on in 1918 on 1st April when an Act of Parliament was passed to merge the Royal Flying Corps (controlled by the British Army) and the Royal Naval Air Service (controlled by the Admiralty). The act also brought into being an Air Council.

In 1939 because of the outbreak of World War II, parliament passed the National Service (Armed Forces) Act which aimed to conscript all men between 18 and 41. Over 1.5 million men were recruited by the end of the year with the largest proportion entering the British Army and the rest evenly spread between the navy and air force. An end to conscription came in in 1960.

These days armed forces redundancy is a prospect for thousands of members of the army, navy and air force. Britain has actually been scaling back since 1957 and the British Armed Forces are entering a new era.
